By the time we reached the entrance to the park, my mind was already blown!

Even the traffic looked beautiful to me.

I was so happy to be out of the city, and the mountains made me feel almost at home!

Fun at the Las Vegas Gun Range

As you know if you've been reading this blog for long, I try to get out and try at least one new adventure on every trip I take.

This time, it was shooting at the Las Vegas Gun Range! If you're interested in doing some shooting the next time you're in Vegas, I recommend the Las Vegas Gun Range. The man that helped us (I'm sorry I forgot his name. Is it Ron? Don? If you're reading this send me a note with your name so I can get it right!!) was friendly and well-informed, and he gave us a great safety rundown before we were allowed to shoot. I felt that I was in good hands, and when I needed some extra instruction with the handgun he gave me exactly the information I needed to shoot confidently and comfortably.

I shot an M-16 fully automatic machine gun...

And a Ruger 10/22 handgun.

Not too bad for a first-timer! (first time shooting a handgun; not first time shooting ever ;o))

And then, after the adrenaline rush was over, it was time for a glamour shot in the Nevada sunshine.

Annnnnd then not so glamourous! LOL!

New York, New York

Right across the street from the MGM Grand on the Last Vegas Strip is the New York, New York. Modeled after... yep, you guessed it!

There is even a mini Statue of Liberty standing guard.

And yes, a roller coaster - roller coaster - ROLLER COASTER folks, ties it all together. What a perfect display of the ~~genius~~ madness that is Las Vegas.

MGM Grand Las Vegas - RAWR!!!

I stayed at the MGM Grand on my recent trip to Las Vegas. The Christmas decorations were all very beautiful and, of course, over the top!

I love this lion! When I arrived, he was decorated like this; I thought he was stunning!

I took that picture on Christmas morning. I wouldn't know until later how amazing the timing was. There are only two people in the photo, and you can barely see them! (I didn't edit or crop it in any way, for the record. :o)) Anyway - this was the first and last time I was ever in any place with so few people. I suppose touring the Las Vegas Strip on Christmas morning has its advantages.

(on the 27th they changed the display to some butt-ugly fighting ring, something to do with the fight held there on the 30th I think? Didn't pay much attention because I wasn't interested and... it was ugly. So NO pictures! lol)

There is also an even bigger lion out front. I think he's 3 stories tall or something ridiculous like that. I'm just guessing at that measurement. He's BIG, anyway.

Checking in With Jimmy the Dog; Our New Life

Hello Friends,

I thought it was time for a check-in with my favourite love-y dog, Jimmy.

Jimmy's having a bit harder of a time these days and it is breaking my poor heart. It's hard to talk about. It's even hard to type about.

He is still happy and sweet and gentle and... did I mention happy? But he is showing me how much older he is now. On Boxing Day (the day after Christmas, for my non-Canadian readers ;o)) he hurt his back really badly. Our poor friend B who was caring for him was so scared and worried - he didn't know what was wrong yet; that must have been so terrible for him. I still feel awful that I was out of town when this all happened. B took Jimmy to the vet and learned that two of his vertebrae, up close to his front legs, are basically fusing together with calcium deposits. This means that from now on, Jimmy is a limited-mobility dog.

And of course! Guess who gets to do the limiting of said mobility? ME - the one with the responsibility. I am supposed to keep him from tugging, jumping, twisting like a goof.... basically all of the things that are super fun for dogs! I also have to give him medication now. He gets muscle relaxers (yeah dude, they really chill him out which is good because he's really jumpy by nature/personality and it's good for him to move slowly) and anti-inflamatory and anti-pain meds.

We are in the process of adjusting our lives to accommodate Jimmy. I bought about a dozen 2' X 5' little rugs for my house because I don't have carpet anywhere and he was having a bit of a hard time keeping his footing. (B also bought rugs for his house; he is such a good friend to us!) I have also moved my main 'hanging out' space in my house from the basement to the main level so Jimmy doesn't have to navigate the yucky stairs in my house to spend time with me. Our friend J has lined up a baby gate for us to use at the top of the stairs so that Jimmy doesn't accidentally fall or go on the stairs when I am away from the house.

So... this is how things are in our house now. I have a senior dog who has more special needs than ever. The good news is that he has spent 14 years earning whatever accommodations need to be made to keep him happy and comfortable. Bad news is only that it is very sad for me but this is what we do for our beloved pets so I am just considering it part of the process.

Traveling Girl Comes Home Again

Happy New Year to one and all!

Another year has come and gone. It seems that each one passes more quickly than the one before it.

I returned safe and sound from my week in Vegas. The wedding was amazing and the trip was fun. I got to spend a day at Red Rock Canyon with my friend (the groom) and got a few quality shots. Most of the photos I took during the trip were high in fun and low in quality. I carried my pocket cam and it's just hard to get great shots at night. There are lights everywhere but it is still dark enough to need the flash. When you use the flash, you lose all the colour and shine of the lights, so lots of the appeal is lost, at least to my eye.

Anyway, here's a shot from a past trip to Mexico. I won't be getting there this year, I am pretty sure the travel bank of Krista is CLOSED for the season! ;)

One More Sleep!
I am heading to Vegas tomorrow! I think I have completed almost all of the items on my To Do list. If it doesn't get done now, it just plain old doesn't need doing.

The dress fits;
The cameras are packed;
The monsters are happy to be heading to Uncle B's house;
And I am heading back out in to the big bad world outside of Whitehorse.

I hope to make time while I am there to take some pictures.

Secondly, the stairs go over the top of a hill, to get to a string of 'more private' beaches. What that means is that, since you have to hike to get to them, they are usually deserted. ;o)

Some of you have mentioned a little bit of jet lag from cruising back and forth between my Yukon kayaking trip and my Mexico beach pictures. I am just feeling a bit like traveling these days I guess. ;o)

No, I didn't sneak away to Mexico again in the last couple of weeks. I DID make the time to process some more of the pictures from my last trip though. That's why we're kind of doing the rapid travel thing these days.

Fall is here. The Mountain Ash trees in my front yard are almost completely red and yellow now. Fresh snow in the taller mountains. The R&R months are zooming toward us now! It was only 2C (36F) at my house this morning. BRRR! :o) :o) :o)

Survival of the Delicate

We found one of the best grayling fishing holes I have ever found on a little hidden river.

Fished there for a couple of hours - the last hour I was standing in the mud on a little bar jutting out into the river. Splashing around, catching dinner and having a great time.

As we were packing up to leave, I looked down at the ground and spied this perfect little feather, caught up in a pile of sticks. How it survived me crashing about, I guess I'll never know!

I took these shots with my little Canon Elph pocket cam. I love that little thing!

All The Gear

I really want to buy a kayak. I'm going to try to save up enough money to get one for next summer.

We rented our Kayaks and all of the associated gear (except for gloves, which I found were invaluable and I was glad to have purchased some before we left) from Up North Adventures. They were friendly and helpful, and when we brought the kayaks back, they seemed genuinely excited to hear how our trip went. I absolutely recommend them, if any of you are wondering about a great place to rent a kayak in Whitehorse. As you can see from their website, they're not just about the kayaks!

Watch For Sweepers!

If you have ever kayaked down a river before...

you know that you have to watch for Sweepers! Logs like this one that stick out of the river bank and threaten to send you and your stuff floating down the river a little wetter and less contained than you were a minute ago. (Or worse... but this is a happy blog so we won't go there right now.)

He sits on my lap. Or on the Console. Or on top of the luggage.

Basically - other than in the driver's area (which seems to be the MOST important area he wants to investigate,) he gets to sit wherever the heck he feels like it!

Montana Mountain HDR

This is a composite image, in more ways than one.

First, I stitched six images together to get the panoramic shot.

Then, I created two copies with varying exposures. This is kind of cheating. Doesn't really bother me, as I'm only after the effect anyway.

I've done two HDR renderings of the same image. Do you prefer one over the other?

ps - Adrian... you're going to cringe when you read this. I'm kind of thinking I like the halo effect. Am I a total Philistine?

This is the mid-line version of the non-HDR image.

I am home again! Four days of kayaking was really awesome and I can't wait to do it again sometime!

The birds seem to get along pretty well, in terms of their inter-species dining program.

Here we have a warbler and (I *think*) a young junco, snacking together.

Warbler on the Lookout & Blogging Vacation

Hi all! I am going away for a few days for another photo tour of the amazing Yukon. I have tried and tried (and tried) to set up some posts for while I am away but BLOGGER isn't interested in seeing that happen. I fought with the editor for over an hour and I just don't have any more fight in me. SO.... this weekend is going to be Radio Silence on Picture Imperfect. I'm sorry... I tried! I will try again when I return home, sometime next week. For now, here is a birdie. :)

This warbler was taking a look around from atop the hanging feeder at my kitchen window.

Then he hopped down for a snack. :o)

Bird Feeder Revival

Good morning, all!Now that the temperatures are getting cooler and fall is in the air,
(yes, I just said that fall is in the air... welcome to the Yukon!)

the birds have returned to my feeders. I think they're stocking up for the winter to come!

This is either a young warbler or a young junco...

There have been a couple families of birds visiting, which is fantastic! Some juncos, some crossbills and warblers too. At times it gets difficult to tell them all apart!

HDR in the Mountains - 3

Who'da thought you could build a cabin on the railroad tracks?

This was such a fun place to wander around. It's like an old west ghost town. I think it used to be inhabited by miners. The buildings are widely spread out, everybody had a nice big yard and a fantastic view!Sadly, this fellow's house was just a touch too close to the tracks. One might presume that he's rather live on the WRONG side of the tracks, than right on top of them.

This lil' guy was eating dandelions in the ditch one day, when I stopped at a rest stop for a stretch break.

Are you ready for it? Prepare to AWWWWWWWWWW... little stinker had to climb up the flower stem to reach the top. tee hee!
